Letters to Pierre Andrieu, 1946-1948 (bulk 1946)

A collection of thirty letters from the German surrealist painter Hans Bellmer to art collector Pierre Andrieu written between 1946 and 1948. Also includes a small pencil drawing by Bellmer and a short letter to Andrieu from the philosopher Jean Brun discussing Bellmer and his work. The correspondence, sent mainly from the French towns of Castres, Carcassone, Revel, and Toulousse, illuminates Bellmer's personal life, his reactions to a life in a French wartime camp for German nationals, and the effect of personal trauma such as his divorce on his artistic production and technique.
